Dimitri Naumovski is raised to be an assassin for Russia’s FSB and is now famed for his cold-blooded skill—his code name is “The Executioner.” He is the nation’s top operative, trusted by its elite leaders: “All great leaders must have a sword to wield when their nation is faced with a crisis. President Putin’s sword had a name. It was a name that struck fear in the hearts of Russia’s enemies. That name is Dimitri Naumovski, Russian FSB.” Dimitri is ordered by his father, Alexander, the head of the FSB, to track down the terrorist Nicoli Maskhadov, who has stolen sarin gas in Chechnya. But in the process, Dimitri becomes suspicious of a connection between Nicoli and Alexander. Later, a CIA agent, Stephen Glenn, reveals to Dimitri that Alexander isn’t really his father. Dimitri’s true father was imprisoned and his mother was sent to a work camp as part of a conspiracy directed by Alexander to steal three nuclear missiles. In fact, Alexander is part of a secret group, The Committee, which intends to reestablish the Soviet Union and destroy the United States. In this energetic and timely tale, Savage delivers a fast-paced plot packed with cinematic action and rich details about Dimitri, Alexander, and the FSB. And Alexander, with his grand global ambitions for Russia, proves a striking villain. But much of the plot has both the implausibility and espionage thriller clichés of a big-budget Hollywood movie. In addition, many lines are written in an overwrought style that sometimes results in inadvertent parody: “Death’s name is Dimitri Naumovski—The Executioner.”
